Hotter than ever - in fact the hottest July day since records began... Bearable in leathers at speed, but not so funny in town, looking around for the way to the cathedral. Accosted again - but this time by two girls from Severn Sound local radio station, giving away ice lollies as a promotion. Well, I'm advertising the station now, so I suppose it worked with me! The ice lolly was very welcome... What a magnificent cathedral - former abbey church which became a cathedral in 1542, the abbey having been dissolved in 1539 (same as Bristol). Splendid Perpendicular east end and tower, largely built within the Norman shell, using proceeds from pilgrims who came to visit the tomb of Edward II - cashing in on the tourists as they do now with Harry Potter fans coming to see the cloisters!
