Curious! Central tower creates major blockage between nave and quire - somehow more so than the screens found in most medieval former abbey churches. Nave was rebuilt 1930-92, wide but short, to enlarge the building for new cathedral status given in 1927. Maureen came with me (by car!); we knew there was a Mothers' Union service late morning so we came after it, only to find all the MU members still there for lunch & an afternoon session. Maureen greeted by Diocesan President and by Worldwide President, both of whom she knew; what must other members have thought when leather-clad biker appears, accompanied by wife who hob-nobs with their leader & visiting speaker, & they promptly join the lunch-queue?!
