Bury St Edmunds

Visited Tue 6 Jun

Last time I was there it was several years ago as Rector of St Edmund's Church, Holme Pierrepont, when we took a party to a Festival of St Edmund - gathering of the clans for members of churches dedicated to the Saxon martyr king. It's been transformed in the meantime, with the completion of the massive central tower over the crossing. Became a cathedral in 1914, but like so many others I've visited it was considered too small. Grand plans drawn up which involved pulling down the Victorian chancel and building new quire, transepts and tower in keeping with the magnificent Tudor nave. Tower the final section, but doesn't contain bells; instead, acts as great lantern bathing the crossing in light. Cost? A cool 12million or so.
