Guildford
Visited Fri 2 Jun
An unplanned visit on the way home after trip to Sussex. Managed to meet up with university friend, now Guildford Diocesan Director of Ordinands, for lunch. Thanks, William! Even if you did call me a middle aged man on an oversized bike... (Jealousy, I call it.) Wanted to see a "testimonial on vellum signed by the Dean in person to record your visit" but will have to make do with the photo like everyone else. Modern cathedral - construction began before WW2, then resumed 1952 and completed 1961. "First Anglican cathedral to be built on a new site in the south of England since the Reformation." Quite stark yet attractive in its simplicity. Away from city centre (though next to University) so not a place people drop into casually.
