St Mary's Hall Appeal

Derby

Visited 16 May

One of the youngest mainland C of E dioceses: founded in 1927, the same year as Guildford and Portsmouth. Cathedral has fine early 16th century tower but the rest of the church was rebuilt in the 18th as it had fallen into disrepair. The vicar simply had the old church (apart from its tower) demolished! Perched up on the north wall, in a memorial, is a small coffin which was discovered during excavation and opened, and found to contain nothing but a pint of ale! "The second smallest cathedral in England", a steward told me - "only Oxford is smaller". Well, at least they agree about which is the smallest! (See Carlisle)
